Abstract: In Europe, shared river basins represent more than 60% of the whole territory. In that context, the Water Framework Directive (WFD) envisages the cooperation between Member States in order to achieve coordinated and integrated management of the transboundary river basins. This context frames the management of drought situations and, namely, of the common implementation of drought management plans (DMP). The work will be specifically dedicated to drought management and planning in the Iberian countries (Portugal and Spain). A characterisation of the corresponding existing conditions and expected developments and perspectives in each country will be presented, framing those on the existing bilateral cooperation on drought issues, namely under the work of the Commission for (the Albufeira) Convention Development and Appliance (CADC) on water resources management of the five river basins shared by the two countries. The importance and impact of climate change in the context of the WFD and drought issues will be also analysed.
