Abstract: Vegetation has a large influence on flow, sediment transport processes and deposition patterns in rivers. This paper investigates sediment dynamics, consisting largely of suspended load in a laboratory channel with bank vegetation. The laboratory experiments were conducted in a reduced Froude scale model of a sand bed stream, set up in a flume with a constant sediment feed. Bed load and deposition patterns were measured with a 5 MHz ultrasonic bed profiler and suspended sediment concentrations were measured with direct sampling. Prior hydrodynamic characterisation performed over a fixed bed is used in the analysis. Bank vegetation was found to increase deposition of fine sediment with potential mechanisms for the deposition explained and discussed in this paper.
