Abstract: Appropriate numerical model dimensions for selecting a hydrodynamic model has been determined to simulate physical processes in the selected lagoon system situated in Turkey. The study covers a six-step approach to decide on the dimensions of the system. The first step includes seasonal data analysis. In the second step, the southern part of the system Dalyan Lagoon-has been divided into computational boxes, which were later used as model boxes of finite difference computational elements. USEPA's one-dimensional finite difference hydrodynamic model DYNHYD5 and the Lung O'Connor method have been used to estimate the flow distribution and velocities in the channels of the Dalyan Lagoon in the next step. In the forth step, a mass balance approach has been used to verify the results obtained in the previous step. A modified version of USEPA's WASP5 model has been used. In the fifth step, simple hydraulic calculations were made for the northern part of the systemthe Koycegiz Lake-to estimate inflow and mixing effects. In the final step, AQUASEA and AQUADYN models were run to estimate lateral and longitudinal changes in the system. Consequently, a laterally integrated longitudinal and vertical model for the southern part-Dalyan Lagoon-and a three dimensional model for the northern part-Koycegiz Lake-were found to be appropriate.
