Abstract: Wave runup is an important parameter for the design of sea defence. Many empirical formulae exist for estimating this parameter, all of them based on experiments. However, these formulations do not consider the effect of the roughness of breakwater revetments. Provided the experiment are often carried out with rubble-mounded breakwaters, wave runup is always underestimated in the case of a smooth revetment. Theoretical investigations are proposed herein, which allow a better estimation in a global context. Comparison with experiments considering different values of the roughness revel a fairly good agreement.
