Abstract: Pearl River Delta (PRD) is one of the most developed areas in the southeast coast of China. The flood control security of PRD plays an important role in the regional social and economic sustainable development. Because of the complex constitute of rivers, river mouths and coastal area of PRD, together with the collective influences of run-off and tide, the flood flow hydrodynamic characteristics in PRD shows extremely complex temporally and spatially. Based on analysis of the water system constitute and hydrodynamic feature of PRD, the present paper developed a systematic hydrodynamic model that covers rivers and river months and coastal area in the water system as a whole. Model calibration and verification are made depending on newly observed distributive data. The developed model is applied in analyzing flood flow characteristics and causes of the exceptional flood elevation rise in the hinterland of PRD since late 90's. The research would be very useful in supporting decision making for flood control in the region.
