Abstract: Using data on the damage of maritime structures by and the course and maximum wind speed of 43 typhoons from 1980 to 1994, vulnerability of 8 coasts in the west of Kyushu island of Japan for 13 groups of typhoon with different courses is estimated. It is possible to forecast the damage by giving the course and the maximum wind speed of the typhoon at 30o north latitude. The coasts facing the closed seas are easily damaged by the typhoons proceeding from the southern area off of Kyushu Island to the northern area. The coasts facing the open sea are easily damaged by the typhoons proceeding from the eastern part of East China Sea to the northeastern part.
