Abstract: Provision of safe drinking water, flood protection, drainage and sanitation rank highly among the needs of all societies. Since early civilisation, various means have been used to provide these essential services. Thus, urban water management in general and urban drainage in particular are very old disciplines, certainly as old as the concept of a city. Nobody knows this fact better than our host colleagues from Greece where over 2000 years old sewers can be found at numerous archaeological sites.
