Abstract: New concepts for managing environment as a socio-ecological system for sustainable development are developed. Management implies development and conservation conjunctively. Water is an important component of the socio-ecological system and its management has to be considered integrally with it. A comprehensive approach has to be adopted. Some concepts and advances in planning approach in the context of sustainable development are outlined. The ideas are illustrated by a case study.
