Abstract: Reliability is a measure of system redundancy. The redundancy in water distribution system (WDS) is due to the availability of additional capacity or units of different components (e.g. pipes, pumps, tanks, valves etc.). In the last two decades, various algorithms have been proposed to quantify the redundancy through different reliability measures. Herein, redundancy in a WDS caused due to available storage capacity at consumer end is focussed for assessment of reliability. It is presumed that during peak hours, supply shortfall at consumer end is met through available buffer storage; and if possible, the deficiency in storage volume during the peak-period may be balanced by excess supply during off-peak periods. The supply shortfall that remained at the end of day is used to assess WDS reliability. Thus, a node is considered reliable if it receives required volume of water at desired pressure during the whole day. This paper (a) describes a model to obtain the performance of a WDS considering nodal storage facility; (b) compares the performance of the WDS with and without storage facility; and (c) provides reliability estimates under both conditions.
