Abstract: The area of this research, the alluvial plain of Tokushima Prefecture, has been blessed with abundant groundwater since ancient times. Therefore, until quite recently the amount of groundwater available for use was substantial. Now, however, groundwater levels are declining and water quality is deteriorating in several zones. As a result, it was recognized that a comprehensive investigation of groundwater activity was a most urgent subject. Additionally, future predictions of the negative effects of water use or works of a river course must be performed. In this research, as much data as possible was collected through field investigations, precipitation amounts, river discharge flows, water levels at observation wells and pumping rates. Several hydraulic analyses were carried out based on the surveyed data in order to clarify the characteristics of groundwater behavior in the area.
