Abstract: Changes of land utilization can be one way of minimizing emissions of nutrients into waters. Within the framework of an international joint research project supported by European Commission (INCO-COPERNICUS programme) a software tool should be developed and tested to enable the user to simulate changes in agricultural soil use and their effect on groundwater for a small catchment area. The following steps have been taken: Studies on water and substances (mainly nitrogen) circulation in unsaturated and saturated zone of a test plot. A combination of models for calculation of transport and metabolism of nitrogen in unsaturated and saturated zones was applied. Different scenarios representative of changing agricultural soil use were calculated. The present paper focuses on the findings of the German group.
