Abstract: A conceptual model of a compound channel from a hydraulic point of view was developed. The conceptual model characterizes the geometry of a two-stage channel combined with different resistance factors including resistance of stiff and flexible vegetation on the floodplains and the resistance caused by the interaction process between a main channel and a floodplain, or between a vegetated zone and a non-vegetated zone. The model allows for treatment of multiple cross-sectional forms and resistance types to be combined in a consistent way. Based on the conceptual model, a pre-processing program was developed to filter topographic field measurement data into a simple form to enable inputting the data into a flow model.
