Abstract: The results of an experimental programme are presented for compound channels of different planforms and boundary roughnesses. The influence of planform and roughness on roughness coefficients is quantified for a range of relative depths, showing that planform and mobile main channel boundary roughness have little effect on roughness coefficient, while floodplain rod roughness significantly increases roughness coefficients especially at large depth. Comparison with larger scale results for the UK Flood Channel Facility shows that while fixed bed roughness coefficients scale relatively well, mobile boundary data show significant divergences.
