Abstract: In the present work the flow characteristics over and downstream of a twodimensional squared obstacle in an open channel are studied experimentally with the aid of Laser Doppler Anemometry. Strong free surface curvature and the formation of separation region behind the obstacle are the dominant features of such a flow. The variation of free surface, distribution of mean velocities profiles, turbulence intensities, skewness and kurtosis coefficients are presented. Also the effect of suction bed in the separated region on flow characteristics is investigated.
