Abstract: This paper presents an analytical solution to the maximal, steady, frictional exchange flow through a rectangular tunnel of constant cross section. Within the context of two-layer internal hydraulics, the fully non-linear problems of maximal frictional tunnel exchange flows are solved as a two-point boundary value problem. The frictional effects on exchange flow rate as well as the density interface profile along the tunnel are discussed. The minimum requirement for maintaining maximal exchange flows between reservoirs with twolayered density structures is also discussed.
