Abstract: In the time of growing environmental concern, accurately predicting the impact of aqueous discharges into rivers, estuaries and coastal waters has become essential. Discharges issued near to the water surface are subject to particular attention because of their harmful effect, which causes the effluent on the natural water basins. One common discharge situation, which prompted extensive research, is the disposal of cooling water from power plants into natural watercourses via open channels. In order to be quantitative assessed the effect of the cooling water discharge from Kozloduy NPP into Danube River the present study was carried out. There were measured the hydrological and the meteorological parameters of the investigated area as flow velocity, water temperature, part of the bottom bathymetry, river discharge, cooling water discharge, air temperature, wind speed, relative humidity sun radiation etc. In order to be obtained representative results, two measuring campaigns were carried out – in November 1991 and in September 1992 and the capacity of the power plant tended to its maximum during this dates. After the field study completing the results were analyzed in quantitative and qualitative manner. In addition of the field study, the effect of cooling water discharge was simulated. It was examined the possibility of using the existed models and the simulation was made by a length-scale expert system and the results obtained from the field measurements were used for calibration and verification of the model CORMIX.
