Abstract: An experimental study performed in a large laboratory tank has produced both laminar and turbulent three-dimensional density currents. The laminar currents were compared with numerical simulations based on the steady, three-dimensional, fluid flow equations. The width of the currents determined from the simulations was found to agree closely with the photographs of the laboratory experiments. Other features of the currents, observed in the experiments, are also compared with the results of the simulations.
