Abstract: The US Bureau of Reclamation has been developing a series of models with the generic denomination of GSTARS, for simulating alluvial rivers with movable boundaries. In this paper the GSTARS 3.0 model (Generalized Sediment Transport model for Alluvial River Simulation version 3.0) is briefly presented. Previous versions of the model (GSTARS 2.0 and 2.1) were developed for the simulation of large (wide) alluvial rivers. In addition to solving river sedimentation problems, GSTARS 3.0 has been developed to address several specific issues in reservoir sedimentation. This paper provides a general description of the concepts and approaches used in GSTARS 3.0. An example is given to illustrate the potential application of GSTARS 3.0 for solutions of engineering problems in reservoir sedimentation.
