Abstract: There are a number of empirical equations to predict the hydraulic roughness of vegetation in channels. A theoretical framework to support the form of these equations is developed. This indicates the assumptions that underlie these empirical equations and indicates the physical significance of the constants within the equation. The relationship between vegetation height and mean flow velocity is considered. An improved description of this relationship could be used to improve the form of the equations used to predict hydraulic roughness.
