Abstract: In this experimental research the main characteristics of the hydraulic jump which is created at a sluice gate in straight non prismatic rectangular open channel are examined. Two cases are investigated, the abruptly expanding channel and the ubraptly converging channel. In the first case the jump is affected by the flow separation, while in the second case no effect is observed. An equation is presented for the conjugate depths' ratio of expanding channels, which tends to be identified with the corresponding equation of classical jump when the non prismatic channel becomes prismatic.
