Abstract: This work is concerned with the role of inertia on the propagation of the dam-break flood wave over a cohesionless erodible bed. A conceptual model is presented. The model is based on the shallow-water approach with bed-load dominated sediment transport and it makes use of some developments recently made in the study of sheet-flows. Under this framework, a numerical finite-difference model is applied, based upon on the TVDMacCormack scheme. Its numerical results are compared with experimental data for different initial conditions. It was found that the numerical model is capable of capturing the major features of the flow, both for sand-and for pumice-bed. Detail dissimilarities are interpreted.
