Abstract: Three-dimensional models are not appropriate for the investigation of large scale and/or long term river problems, due to limitations in computational capacity. Quasi-3D models, obtained by supplementing 2DH depth-integrated flow models with a closure submodel for 3D effects, provide an interesting alternative. This paper compares experimental data on flow in a sharp open-channel bend with a horizontal bed to numerical simulations carried out using three models: (i) a 2DH flow model without closure submodel for 3D effects; (ii) a quasi-3D flow model including a linear closure submodel, which validity is limited to weak curvatures; (iii) a quasi-3D flow model including a non-linear closure submodel that remains valid for strong curvatures. The inclusion of 3D effects into a 2DH flow model by means of the non-linear closure submodel significantly improves the predictive capacity at a low computational cost.
