Abstract: The research reported in this paper is focussed on the velocity distributions of flow through a flow field comprising arrays of circular columns having an orientation normal to the channel bed. The work was undertaken as part of a larger study of nature-like fishways, wherein boulders may be used to create suitable swimming pathways and resting areas for fish migrating up a rocky ramp fishway. The test program involved three column arrays and three discharge conditions, which resulted in the occurrence of subritical, critical and supercritical flow regimes. The results were obtained within the uniform flow region of the flow field. From the analysis presented in the paper, it is shown how all of the vertical velocity distributions within the flow field were normalized with particular scaling parameters and how the spatial distribution of the vertical average velocity was also normalized. On the basis of regression analysis of the normalized results, it is possible to predict the vertical velocity profile anywhere within the region of uniform flow.
