Abstract: As Dhaka city stands on the Buriganga, many commercial activities and health conditions of significant portion of the people of Dhaka city are inter-related with the navigability and water quality of the Buriganga River. Water quality of the river also related with the hydrological condition. Historical water level and available discharge records are inspected for the Buriganga and its nearby rivers to assess the trend hydrological conditions. Navigability of the Buriganga in addition to water quality is gradually declining. Available water depth for navigation has been reduced especially during ebb tide, it reveals that fresh water supply from contributing upstream sources into this river has been reduced. From historical water level and discharge data available, it is observed that flows in the tributaries of the Buriganga and also its surrounding streams were almost similar up to 1974 but after that flows are gradually declining. It may be due to silting up of the mouth and channel at the upstream or due to reduced flow in the parent river. Restoration of flow condition as well as quality of water in the Buriganga is an important issue.
