Abstract: Four formulas for the fractional transport capacity of nonuniform bed-material load, including the SEDTRA module (Garbrecht et al., 1995), the Wu et al. 's (2000) formula, the modified Ackers and White's formula (Proffit and Sutherland, 1983) and the modified Engelund and Hansen's formula (Wu and Vieira, 2000), were selected for the CCHE1D channel network model. The four selected formulas were tested against extensive experimental and field data, including Brownlie's (1981) collection of total sediment discharge data and Toffaleti's (1968) nonuniform sediment data. It was found that all four selected formulas could provide very good predictions for the uniform sediment transport capacity, but only Wu et al. 's formula and the SEDTRA module provided more precise results for the fractional transport capacity of nonuniform bed-material load. Furthermore, the four formulas implemented within the CCHE1D channel model were tested by using three flume experiments of Newton (1951), Ashida and Michiue (1971) and Seal et al. (1995), as well as three field cases in the Danjiangkou Reservoir, the Pa-Chang River and the Goodwin Creek Experimental Watershed. Wu et al. 's formula provided the most reliable predictions in these test cases. The modified Ackers and White's formula could not be used for very fine sediment transport. The SEDTRA module did not work well in the range of low sediment transport.
