Abstract: The aim of this study is a very practical one: to see if a protocol of model validation for studies bearing on subjects such as pollution by groundwater systems can be established, so as to provide, for the results of those studies, reliable validation standards, to be used by legislators, governmental agencies, industrial concerns. As will be mentioned after, a number of valuable studies on models and their optimisation have been published, but they focus on the quantitative aspects of modelization, in particular mathematical models. We have found only brief mention of the major difficulty in engineering models, the steps that lead from raw data to a picture susceptible of being reduced to a mathematical model. This paper is intended to survey the validation problem without ignoring those first steps.
