Abstract: Wetlands and other vegetated areas are being increasing recognised for their natural flood alleviation properties. However, flow through vegetation is complex and poorly understood. In this study, a process of the evolution of formulations from hydraulic data using a data driven discovery technique, genetic programming, has been employed to gain further understanding of the floodplain processes within vegetated areas. The results of the preliminary experiments, presented herein, were found to be encouraging. Details are also given of proposed further work that will focus on the evolution of formulations that are not only accurate but also physically sound.
