Abstract: Through a flume experiment and theoretical analysis, this paper proposes a relationship between impact pressures produced by the impinging jets and flow patterns in the plunge pool downstream of a high dam. The results show that values of controlling flow patterns in the plunge pool such as degree of dispersion and the submerged coefficient are better than with the impact pressure on the bottom of the plunge pool. An expression of hydrodynamic impact pressure in the plunge pool is proposed in terms of the degree of the dispersion and the submergence, which can be used in the design of plunge pools.
