Abstract: Traditionally, totally alien modelling systems have been coupled at a cost of degree of coupling against independence. Often, the technologies chosen to facilitate coupling have been closed source technologies that constantly change and have usually supported just one operating system or modelling environment. Alternatively, open modelling systems have been attempted which use standard file formats to link models together. These file formats often become cumbersome and bloated, and couple at one level of complexity only. There is currently no single truly open model coupling system.
