Abstract: Lifelong learning is identified as an important factor in helping to ensure the knowledge base on water in the future. But lifelong learning needs to be structured in terms of education. This however emphasises the supply rather than the demand side. What is needed is to find ways of providing every water professional with ready access to structured learning resources and with incentives to capitalise on these. This will involve making increasing use of Internet-based technologies and taking advantage of group processes, such as those involved in communities of practice. It can result in certification of practitioners in particularly strategic areas of water management.
