Abstract: In pressure duct systems with surge tanks, the headrace tunnel cannot always be protected from pressure surges induced by turbine, pump and valve regulation, which in the case of superpositioned pressure waves can lead to massive damage to the tun-nel lining. In order to ascertain the influence of the surge orifice on the transmission of pressure in the tunnel, a simple experiment with T-junction models was conducted in which various symmetrical and assymmetrical circular-orifice plates were used under various steady basic flows with single pressure waves. The suitability and li-mitation of application of a steady throttle headloss assumption in the common un-steady calculation was tested by a standard characteristics method using control calculations of the experiments.
