Abstract: This paper presents the knowledge gained from measurements during the construction, model tests, and design related to the surging phenomena of two restricted-orifice surge tanks at the Okukiyotsu No.2 Power Station in Niigata Prefecture, Japan. The coefficient of restriction for the orifice, or port, was found to be more desirable than the value used in design as the scale of the tests and actual port grew in size. In the load rejection test, and during the automatic frequency control operations test, it was confirmed that the two surge tanks performed better than expected.
