Abstract: Many existing fish passage structures are less effective than originally hoped. Often the hydraulics of the fish passes deviate from that desired when all the complexities of operation are brought to bare. As part of Reclamation's fish passage research program, field evaluations, laboratory models, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) numerical methods are being used to identify and improve the hydraulics of fish passes. A recent case study of a non-salmonid fish passage structure is presented that typifies many of the lessons learned and the value of the various hydraulic evaluation techniques.
