Abstract: The mechanism of energy dissipation for submerged impinging jets downstream of large dams is very complex. This paper is concerned with the main characteristics of submerged impinging jets and their impinging potential on floor slabs in a plunge pool downstream of large dams. Based on model tests and theoretical approaches, the mechanism of fluctuating pressure propagation along cracks of floor slabs, flow behaviors of submerged impinging jets and the stability condition of floor slabs in a plunge pool are investigated in detail. Some hydraulic predicting formulas concerned are derived, which provides scientific basis for hydraulic design of plunge pools downstream of large dams.
