Abstract: Local scouring downstream of hydraulic jumps and stilling basins is strongly affected by the geometry of the hydraulic structures and the turbulence character. This phenomenon has been studied at the Department of Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering of Naples since 1985 (Gisonni 1994). LDA measurements of turbulence downstream of the classical hydraulic jump and of the stilling basin with abrupt bottom rise are presented. It was possible to compare turbulence measurements obtained by means of different experimental techniques. Furthermore some scouring tests have been performed. A simple approach is presented to estimate the maximal scour depth as a function of a turbulence parameter and the critical velocity V_a for the sediment movement.
