Abstract: Measurements at three barrages of the Elbe cascade were utilised to test predictive equations for oxygen uptake at overfalls. The Avery-Novak equation gave good results and has now been incorporated into the operating rules of the whole 170 km cascade. The boundary conditions and other aspects of the use of the equation are discussed in some detail.
