Abstract: Dual flow screens are used in cooling water and service water intakes of power plants to replace the once-through travelling screens. Dual flow screens may result in a skewed approach flow to the pumps with concentrated flow regions and backflow eddy regions. When the once-through travelling screens are replaced with dual flow screens, objectionable vortexing and swirl are likely to be induced. Hence, modifications to the intake involving introduction of vortex suppressing and flow straightening devices will be required. Based on several hydraulic model studies conducted at the Alden Research Laboratory, adverse flow patterns due to dual flow screens of the in-flow type and possible remedial measures are discussed.
