Abstract: The excitation of edge waves by a random wave approaching a straight beach of constant slope is investigated. The sea wave is assumed to he characterized by a narrow band amplitude spectrum centered around some value ω_0~*. It is found that edge waves of frequency ω_0~*/2 may be excited. Comparing the obtained results with those characteristic of the monochromatic wave case it is found that the unstable regions in the parameter space widen but the equilibrium amplitude of the edge waves is usually smaller and decreases as the width of the spectrum increases.
