Abstract: Results are presented of a model which simulates the behaviour of depth-aver aged tidal currents, transport of suspended sediment and bottom changes in an embayment. The basic state of this model, a spatially uniform tide over a bottom with constant slopes, turns out to be unstable with respect to bottom perturbations if the width-to-depth ratio and bottom friction are suf-ficiently large. The long-term dynamics of the bed forms is investigated with a set of coupled nonlinear amplitude equations. It appears that the model can have multiple equilibria and finite-amplitude periodic solutions. The latter have characteristics similar to observed migrating bed forms in tidal inlets.
