Transport and Separation of Particles by Chaotic Advection

Abstract: In this paper we examine the effects of fluid inertia and particle inertia on both transport and separation in the chaotic mixing of a flow consisting of a continuous phase and a disperse phase. The flow considered here occurs in the gap between eccentric cylinders. Mixing efficiency is found to decrease somewhat with increasing Reynolds number. By controlling flow parameters, we also find that finite-sized particles in the disperse phase may be"captured" by attractors of the system.
