Abstract: The reservoir structure technique has been developed in France in order to reduce flooding risks and to protect receiving media. Before infiltration or drainage, stormwater is temporarily stored in the structure of streets, parking areas, sport grounds by using open-textured sud-base materials to hold water. In order to fulfil their hydraulic and mechanical functions these structures have to be specially designed and must be adapted to local constraints. For instance, on sloping surfaces, the sub-base "reservoir" must be partitioned, so that all the water will not be collected in the lowest part. In order to reduce clogging problems and the effects of heavy traffic, new building procedures are proposed. At last if the reservoir structures reduce the runoff flow rates, they improve the quality of runoff water.
