Abstract: This paper initially discusses a selection of design procedures used in various countries now and in the past, and highlights a number of basic demands that should be fulfilled in a general design methodology. Then, it describes a new simple and easy-to-use conceptual design methodology that has been incorporated in a recent Danish design guideline. The errors introduced by resorting to a simple method are discussed in the light of the uncertainty of the involved parameters and finally, some conclusions and recommendations are given.
