Abstract: Experiments and numerical analysis were carried out to investigate the heating characteristics of various pavement surfaces. It was found that due to small pore size in the porous ceramic pavement, this kind of pavement could keep water inside for a long time and even could absorb the water from the soil below. The consequent evaporation at this surface made its surface temperature appreciably lower than that of the non-porous and normal porous block pavement surfaces. Due to the large pore size of the material, the surface of normal porous pavement was very dry, and virtually almost no evaporation occured. The normal porous and nonporous pavement surfaces can absorb a large amount of the incoming net radiation, which increases their surface temperature and modifies the urban thermal environment in the unfavorable way.
