Abstract: Computer models have been developed to improve the understanding and management of environmental systems for the betterment of society. Models have been created to simulate open channel flow to predict the aerial extent of flooding. The beneficial aspect of these models is their ability to yield reliable flood forecasts by solving sophisticated channel routing equations. However, these models are not easily understood by people with limited computer experience. People are unable to understand the basic structure of these models because the equations solved by the models are embedded in numerous lines of C or FORTRAN code. Consequently, the effective use of these models is limited to skilled computer programmers
