Abstract: Sample statistics and probability weighted moments of floods recorded in several gaging stations located in Chile, England, France and USA are compared. Results show a remarkable similarity between probability weighted moment (PWM) ratio diagrams, even though the hydrologic conditions of the four regions are different. Relations between PWM of a certain order and PWM of the preceding order are well defined and show a small dispersion. This indicates that it is possible to estimate accurately a superior order PWM as a function of the PWM of smaller order. Consequently, it is possible to get a good estimate of the first 5 PWM as a function of the mean flood and an estimate of the second order moment, and thus calculate the parameters of the probability models which are used to represent floods.
