Abstract: The stochastic variability of hydrological and climatological variables results in considerable uncertainty in system operation of the Mae Klong River basin, Thailand. With further development of irrigation command area and additional requirement of water for domestic and industrial use in the future, measures to improve the system operational reliability by modifying the present operation ruling levels of reservoirs, attains considerable importance among others. The system operational reliability has been evaluated by using the water balance function which expresses the monthly available water in excess of demands as a function of stochastic variables and deterministic variables such as the operation ruling levels of reservoirs for each month. A non-linear optimization on a combined function of monthly water balances has been carried out to determine the optimal reservoir operation ruling levels while the system operation reliability is maximized. The monthly observed data of hydrological and climatological variables from 1965 to 1994 has been used for the analysis.
