Abstract: The exchanges of contaminants in a square basin with an external open-channel flow, through a turbulent mixing layer, were examined using the video imaging method. The retention time of the recirculating flow in the square basin was de-termined for a range of Froude numbers and basins of two sizes. The turbulence in the mixing layer was either in an active mode of oscillation, or in a passive mode of coexistence with the flow in the basin. The dimensionless retention time for the flow in the active and the passive modes are ▲respectively. The sharp reduction of the retention time in the active mode is as-sociated with coherent oscillation and a spreading-rate doubling of the turbulent mixing layer.
