Abstract: The experiments on the flow dynamics of the starting vertical plume colliding with the density stratified layer is carried out. The three typical flow patterns of the starting vertical plume are observed. These are dependent on the density of inflow and the density distribution in the environment. The velocity and density distributions are measured. It is found in this study that the mixing mechanism is strongly affected by the flow patterns.
