Digital Particle Tracking Velocimetry

Abstract: A recently developed approach to digital particle tracking velocimetry (DPTV) based on cross-correlation digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) is presented which has im-proved accuracy and resolution relative to traditional DPIV. In particular, this approach allows for the direct measurement of instantaneous fluctuating gradients, allowing the components in any two-dimensional plane of the turbulent dissipation to be measured directly. Optimal parameters for both DPTV and DPIV are presented from a Monte Carlo simulation analysis. Validation results are presented from the comparison of measurements by the DPTV technique in a turbulent flat plate boundary layer to laser Doppler anemometer (LDA) measurements in the same flow as well as direct numerical simulation (DNS) data. Viscous wavy free-surface boundary layer measurements are presented demonstrating the power of the algorithm near irregularly shaped surfaces which typically are problem areas for PIV algorithms.
