Abstract: The problem of predicting sediment mobility in the limit of very small bed Reynolds number (very fine sediment) is considered from a dimensional analysis and experimental perspective. Dimensional analysis is used to produce the functional dependence in this limit, and a correction to Shield's curve is proposed. A new method of measuring very small transport rates for fine sediment is described, based on high precision measurement of bed elevation (±10μm) with a scanning laser device. Results are presented for two silt-sized materials (35,42 μm), and compared to previou s measurements and formulas for incipient transport.
